Here’s the scene in Queens today. I’m prepping to show altered books to a group of teens who will be altering their own.
You can see how much variety there is, from the very sculptural, such as Frank Green’s The Scarlet Letters (foreground) to subtle interactions with text, for example, Mary Lum’s The Final Results of Psychoanalytic Treatment (way in the background).
The big kahuna at far left is by Alison Marchant. The artist appears to have taped together over 300 pages from a book (The History of England) and then painted or stenciled a dramatic abstract image on one side. I opened the box and started unfolding and it just takes over.
As for the bolted books, we’re not actually sure who brought them together, or when.—jt
